Van Den
Eynde
Festival 2008 |
|
 |
 |
I cannot believe it is festival season already; it seems like only two minutes ago we were hanging up our weighing in gear at the end of last season. It has been a busy winter, I have been busy planning for the festivals, which have all been a sell out for a number of weeks already, the boys have been busy out on the lakes making sure they are in tip top condition. Platforms have been repaired, pegs been numbered and the islands have had some serious trimming! The Van Den Eynde festival is always the first on the calendar and remains our only pellet free festival. White Acres has been undergoing some big development projects over the winter one of which that has had a knock on affect to the festivals but, we feel, in a positive way.
This year sees Jennys replacing Trelawney in the festival. The banks behind Trelawney are being developed and will soon to be home to our new contemporary lodge accommodations, because of the horrendous winter weather we have had this work is slightly behind schedule and we would not want the anglers being disturbed so we have replaced the lake with Jennys. By putting Jennys & Python together we believe we now have a fairer section as Trelawney used to dominate the section with the wining weights this years it will be a lot closer as the anglers on Python have more chance to fish for overall daily money opposed to just section wins. Other lakes in the festival have also seen work done to them over the winter and have proved to be fishing well. Bolingey does not get fished much over the winter but on the few matches that have been held there positive reports have been flooding back, so those that will be taking to the banks this week will be in luck as there are plenty of hungry mouths to feed and boy are they feeding! Charlie at Gwinear has done his best at trying to restore the lake to what it once was but only time will tell if he has done enough, there has been some re-stocking done and the recent local matches have thrown up some good weights on the usual pegs but there is a difference in having a couple matches a week with a dozen anglers to having a solid 5 days fishing with 36 anglers each day we will know soon enough if it is living up to it’s nickname!
The weather over the weekend leading up to the festival has been grim to say the least, only a few brave souls dared to brave the weather to practise on Saturday, most people seemed keener to re-acquaint themselves with the Anglers Arms! Sunday seemed a slight improvement with more taking to the banks for a practise and some declining due to the previously mentioning of their re acquaintance with the pub! I shall do my best to keep you updated with the action during with week to let you know how the first White Acres festival of 2008 is going.
DAY ONE For some anglers this is their first time with their kit for 2008 for others this has been in planning for months with rigs tied for every possibility. The draw gets done before the anglers arrive so they know in what rotation and section they will be fishing at the first draw of the week is always a lively, and also somewhat nervous, event. After a reminder of rules and information the draw is on, read on to find out which draw bags are stating the week of with a bang and who is banking on a there dropped result!
A SECTION POLLAWYN
In recent Rover matches the lake has been producing the top weights but unfortunately on pellet, those that did have a practice on Sunday seemed to struggle slightly making the wrong choices so today proved a difficult dilemma for some today with what approach to take. One angler who defiantly made the correct decision was the lake winner Grant Albutt on peg 25, Grant fished three strong lines giving him a victorious of 139lb 7oz he fished meat to the island, meat shallow on the long pole and also on the waggler to the island with meat. Adey Lindsay took second on the lake with 127lb 6oz; Adey was on peg 21 and caught on the bomb with meat. Third went to Russ Parsons on one of the points at peg 18, facing the high bank Russ fished up to the aerator on the meat feeder to give him a weight of 99lb 5oz. The next best weight came from Trevor Conroy on peg 27, Trevor weighed in with 96lb 4oz caught on the feeder and waggler both with meat.

B SECTION JENNYS/PYTHON
Jennys is being fished from 1 – 21 and amongst those numbers are some previous “Parkdean Master” producing pegs, many of the anglers are unfamiliar with fishing the lake but with well documented match reports they have a strong idea of what to expect. The lake winner today was Darren Kempson on peg 9, Darren landed a decent sized carp to add to his winning weight of 74lb 3oz caught on the straight lead with meat. Over on the wides of Python it was a closely fought battle for second overall. Stewart Lister on peg 15 and Ken Oldham on peg 14 both fished a great match with Stewart narrowly took the win to pick up the section and to come second with a weight of 55lbs caught on the ground bait feeder with double red maggot, Ken was third with 53lb 8oz caught on the tip with maggot. Our current Parkdean Master Des Shipp also picked up a section win and had the next best weight with 49lb 8oz, Des was on Python peg 36 and caught on meat and corn at 13 meters.

D SECTION PORTH
It was a tough day for those anglers on Porth with the lake being virtually colourless, despite rain over the weekend there is no sigh of the desired chocolaty appearance, one can only hope that as the week goes on the colour changes slightly to add to the weights. Taking the lake win today was Adam Wakelin who drew peg 84; Adam fished the groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 15lb 7oz. Leon Seabright picked up second with 14lb 9oz, Leon was on peg 89 and caught on the feeder & worm. Third went to Tom Dabowa who caught on the pole and feeder with double red maggot for a weight of 10lb 8oz from peg 86. Will Raison got off to a fantastic start to take the lake win with a whopping 223lb 4oz; Will was on peg 22 and caught on the meat feeder and meat down the edge. Second on the lake was Harry Billing on peg 20, Harry caught on the pole at 18 meters with meat for a weight of 193lb 4oz. Steve Ringer took a section win and also came third with 184lb 3oz, Steve caught on the meat feeder from peg 17. DAY TWO
Well day one got of to a great start and the Cornish weather seems to have settled (for a while!) as day two turned out fine with clear skies. Those that started of their festival campaign yesterday with a section win will be looking to follow that perfect result – but have they? Read on to find out all of the catch action from day two and how our top twenty is looking.
A SECTION JENNYS/PYTHON
Despite the blue skies it was a blustery day for those that drew up on Jennys, as it is one of our most exposed lakes, because of the wind some anglers were not able to hold the pole at the desired length and looked to other methods whilst others took the chance and persevered. The section weights were extremely tight today and although Jennys dominated for the daily lake prizes the weights on python were still close. Wayne Sharman took the lake win from Jennys peg 19, Wayne fought with the wind to fish the pole but changed tactics to the bomb and meat to give him a winning weight of 64lb 8oz. Second went to Ian Russell with 61lb 20z, Ian was next door on peg 20 and caught on the straight lead with meat fishing out into the open water. Steve Clark took third with 58lb 7oz, Steve caught on the feeder with double corn on the hook from peg 15. The next best weight, and the top weight from python, came from Tommy Pickering with 57lb 10oz; Tommy was on Python peg 16 and caught 61 reasonable sized F1’s on the groundbait feeder with double maggot on an 18 hook.
SECTION WINNERS
WAYNE SHARMAN 9 POINTS 64LB 8OZ
TOMMY PICKERING 9 POINTS 57LB 10OZ
MICHAEL CHARALAMBUS 9 POINTS 32LB 1OZ
JOHN PANTRY 9 POINTS 30LB 4OZ
B SECTION GWINEAR
Unfortunately the lake still remains fairly peggy which is fine for those that can draw but for most they know the outcome before they even arrive at the lake. It was a great winning weight for the day with Mick Lees on peg 24 weighing in with 137lb 10oz, Mick caught down the edge on meat. Ken Oldham took second on the lake with 86lb 11oz, Ken was on peg 25 and caught to the bar on the tip with double red maggot and also had 5 carp down the edge on corn. Third on the lake went to Mark Brown on peg 20, mark caught on the tip with maggot and also on the pole with corn and maggot for a very close weight of 86lb 10oz. Simon Fry had the next best weight on the lake, Simon was on peg 28 and caught down the edge on worm & caster and had a few stcokies on meat for a weight of 81lb 4oz.
SECTION WINNERS
MICK LEES 9 POINTS 137LB 10OZ
SIMON FRY 9 POINTS 81LB 4OZ
DAVE CAMPBELL 9 POINTS 41LB 1OZ
PETER BOWLES 9 POINTS 36LB 2OZ
C SECTION PORTH
Porth fished fairly hard again today with still not much sign of colour in the lake. The winning weight today came from Cliff Mills on peg 71; Cliff fished on the waggler, 9 meter pole and feeder with caster and worm for a weight of 12lb. Ben Leach was second on the lake with 11lb 13oz, Ben caught on the pole and a feeder both with red maggot catching 30 plus small skimmers from peg 23. Third on the lake went to Skip McCabe, Skip caught on the groundbait feeder with red maggot from peg 89 for a weight of 10lb 7oz. Paul Carnwell had the next best weight with 10lb, Paul caught on the feeder with maggot and worm from peg 74.
SECTION WINNERS
CLIFF MILLS 9 POINTS 12LB
BEN LEACH 9 POINTS 11LB 13OZ
SKIP MCCABE 9 POINTS 10LB 7OZ
NEIL MACHIN 9 POINTS 9LB 10OZ
D SECTION BOLINGEY
Well Bolingey just seems to get better and better, with 14 weights recorded over 90lbs today and some in the high 100’s, it was only the other day that the owner was worried there was not enough fish in there! The lake winner today was Steve Sanders on peg 20, Steve caught consistently all day on the 18 meter pole with meat for a final weight of 218lb 5oz. Second went to John Stepton with 164lb 13oz, John was on peg 22 and caught all carp in the margins on meat. Keith Vaughan took third from peg 46, Keith caught all on meat on the deck on the long pole for a weight of 156lb 3oz. 134lb 13oz was the next best weight on lake and that came from Steve Cooke on peg 9, Steve caught on meat and corn on the short pole.
SECTION WINNERS
STEVE SANDERS 9 POINTS 218LB 5OZ
KEITH VAUGHAN 9 POINTS 156LB 3OZ
STEVE COOKE 9 POINTS 134LB 13OZ
STEVE MAYO 9 POINTS 122LB 10OZ
E SECTION POLLAWYN
It was also a good day on Pollawyn with the lake producing some good weights across the high bank and tight weights across the sections. The lake winner today was Phil Ringer with 190lb 14oz, Phil was on peg 17 and fished the meat feeder tight across to the island, he had 2 10lb plus carp and a mixed bag of carp from 3lb – 10lb it was a slow start for Phil who caught well late on in the match. Harry Billing on peg 28, Harry caught steadily throughout the whole of the match on the meat feeder to the aerator for a weight of 126lb 5oz. Third with 108lb 15oz was Michael Sanders on peg 19, Michael caught patchily through out the match but produced a nice bag of carp to 10lb caught on the feeder to the island with meat. Bob Stevens got off to a cracking start to the match and caught well early on fishing the meat feeder to the island from peg 27, the bits slowed down towards the end but still gave him the next best weight of the day with 107lb 5oz
SECTION WINERS
PHIL RINGER 9 POINTS 190LB 14OZ
HARRY BILLING 9 POINTS 126LB 5OZ
WILL RAISON 9 POINTS 96LB 4OZ
JAY DAVIS 9 POINTS 61LB 12OZ
So William currently tops the leader board with a perfect score of two section wins, there are already some amazing weights on the festival and we all have the feeling that this one is going to be too close to call. Come back tomorrow to see what day three has done to the overalls.
Cheers, Kirsty

DAY THREE
So we have reached the midway point of the festival and for some this becomes the make or break point, those that have got strong points behind them can almost see the goal posts already whilst others hope to put a bad result (or results) behind them and go for broke over the next couple of days. Day three saw a change in the weather which has affected the fishing slightly but read on to find out if Will is still on stop and who is creeping up there.
A SECTION GWINEAR
Today saw some better weights on Gwinear with the results being very tight for the lake and some section wins. Unfortunately one section still seems to be fishing very hard but overall it did not seem to be as peggy today. Grant Albutt was the lake winner today with 128lb 8oz; Grant was on peg 16 and caught shallow on caster with maggot on the hook. Second went to Colin Fuller on peg 25, Colin fished the 16 meter pole on the deck and up in the water on maggot for a weight of 106lb 9oz. Tim Russell had a weight of 104lb 10oz to take third, Tim caught shallow on the waggler with meat and shallow on the pole with caster from peg 19. The next best weight on the lake was 88lb 10oz and this came from Steve Clark on peg 27, Steve caught on maggot down the edge and meat at 13 meters.
GRANT ALBUTT 9 POINTS PEG 16 128LB 8OZ

First on the lake today went to Paul Fillmore with 15lb 8oz, Paul was on peg 89 and caught shallow on meat. Kevin Marslin picked up second on peg 88 with a weight of 9lb 11oz, Kevin caught at 6 meters on meat and maggots. Third went to Ricky Teal on peg 34, Ricky caught on the pole with meat for a weight of 9lb 1oz. C SECTION BOLINGEY
The weather today has definitely affected the amount of big catches recorded, with the wind blowing down the valley onto the lake this hampered the anglers presentation and the ability to fish the long pole. The lake was won today by Neil Machin on peg 50, Neil caught on worm down the edge and meat at 6 meters for a weight of 158lb 13oz. Ben Leach took second with 146lb 2oz, Ben was on peg 49 and caught on the pole at 5 meters and had 5 “lumps” down the edge on meat. Geoff Ringer caught on the meat feeder from peg 10 to take third with a weight of 129lb 6oz. D SECTION POLLAWYN
Good weights on Pollawyn today but again the anglers were hampered by the wind that proved to be awkward for some. Tim Nash took the lake win today with 129lb 14oz, Tim fished the meat feeder to the aerator and then the waggler until he had run out, catching carp between 3 – 8lb from peg 28. On peg 27 Graham Hall was second with 91lb 6oz Graham started on the groundbait feeder but did not catch until he had switched over to the meat feeder and then later caught out in the open water on the waggler. Third with 88lb 12oz was Adam Wakelin, Adam was on peg 30 and started the match on the meat feeder & waggler to the island but this was slow at the start and only had 5 carp by 3.45pm, the pole line then suddenly came into action and he caught one a bung on meat ending up with 15 carp to 10lb. Glen wills had the next best weight on the lake with 88lb 2oz, Glen was on peg 25 and caught on the meat feeder to the island.

E SECTION JENNYS/PYTHON It was a very cold day up on Jennys with some anglers deeply regretting not wearing their thermals today! It was a fantastic lake win up on Jennys for Michael Gorman on peg 21 weighing it with a staggering 137lb 4oz, Michael caught on the meat feeder ending up with 2 big nets of carp. Will Raison was second with a weight of 92lb 3oz from Python peg 9, Will fought against the elements and persevered on the long pole at 18.5 meters with meat. Day Four
Well we have reached the pen-ultimate day of the festival and it has already been a great start to the festival, already the top twenty looks like a whose who in the world of match angling and it’s also nice to see some of the regular festival anglers up there as well. It was a damp and miserable start to the day but the sun eventually burned through the mist and turned out ok. Read on to find out all the match action from day four and how our top twenty looks going into the final.
DAY FOUR
A SECTION PORTH
It has been a mixed but fairly tough week at Porth but the results do seem to be getting better as we have progressed. Fingers crossed for our forthcoming festivals the weather will have settled and with, hopefully, a warmer temperature the weights should improve. Taking the lake win on Porth today was Callum Dicks, Callum was on peg 37 and fished the long pole with groundbait and caster for a weight of 13lb 4oz. Russ Parsons was second with 11lb 12oz, Russ fished the long pole with maggot over groundbait from peg 39. Third was Steve Clark, Steve was on peg 86 and had a weight of 11lb 6oz caught on the waggler and pole with caster. Colin Fuller had the next best weight on the lake with 10lb 11oz, Colin was on peg 88 and caught early on using the feeder and at 7 meters on the pole with groundbait over caster.
SECTION WINNERS
CALLUM DICKS PEG 37 9 POINTS 13LB 4OZ

So Will Raison is our first festival champion of the season, congratulations Will.
We all feel and I hope you agreed that this has been a great festival and we would like to thank and congratulate all the anglers that fished with us for making it such and enjoyable time.A massive thank you to Van Den Eynde for once again sponsoring the festival – without whom we couldn’t run the event, Wendy Lythgoe from Van Den Eynde was with us for the morning draw where all of the 180 anglers were given products and also for the evening presentation where the top twenty were presented with medals, goodie bags & exclusive hoodies.
Wendy has confirmed that the company will once again sponsor the festival but this time under their sister company name Bait-Tec, so stay tuned for the news of the White Acres & Bait-Tec festival 2009.
If you have been reading these reports and fancy having a go at one of the festivals next year please do not hesitate to give me a shout.
Thanks for reading the reports and we will catch up with you soon for the Dynamite bait festival.
Cheers, Kirsty |
